Our Commitments

Discover Walks is committed to quality
We appreciate that guests grant us their time and attention. In return, our overall goal is to make sure every guest has a great time, worthy of the city of light, on each of our Walks. We keep our ear to the ground for new developments in and about Paris, we constantly monitor quality, and we keep challenging ourselves to do better.

Discover Walks is committed to comfort
We are mindful of guest comfort. Our Walks cover short distances, we keep away from stairs and steep hills whenever possible, and we point to water fountains and public toilets when available. We are punctual, our Walks start and end at major city landmarks. All of our City Guides have, not native, but fluent English.

Discover Walks offers free private planning services
The closing of each Walk always includes private time with any interested guest, to help you plan the continuation of your stay in Paris. We do not make reservations, but we gladly advise you and share our experiences as residents. You can think of City Guides as your free concierge.

Discover Walks walking tours take place regardless of the weather
Most visitors don’t travel to Paris every five minutes, and so we operate rain or shine, and we run our Walks for as few as one guest.

Discover Walks services are free
Our Walks are strictly free – our revenue comes exclusively from guest tips and free Walks operate only thanks to the generosity of guests, but a guest is never required to give a tip.

For quality experience, our Walks are generally limited to 15 participants. When a Walk is full, we always try our best to quickly bring in another City Guide and get another Walk together.

Discover Walks City Guides are unique
The individuals we select as City Guides are native Parisians with fluent English and with the right knowledge and personality to do a stellar job. Discover Walks provides them with additional training, both about Paris and about leading Walks. We put in place all that we can to provide City Guides with satisfactory income and working conditions.

Is advanced booking required for Discover Walks walking tours?
We do not take advanced booking, and we do not guarantee space on a particular Walk.

Groups are advised to book in advance
We apply the opposite rule for groups of 8 or more. Because we keep our group sizes limited, groups of 8 and more are encouraged to book their Walks ahead of time. Send us an email with the number of parties, the date and time and name of the Walk you have chosen, to:
paris(at)staging.discoverwalks.com

Our Walks are strictly free, and as such we are not liable for any harm that guests may encounter during the Walks, and guests are expected to carry their own personal insurance. We are also not liable should an announced Walk not take place, or should we run out of spaces available on a particular Walking tour.

What do we expect of our guests?
There is not much that we ask of guests beyond the usual precautions for comfort and safety on walking tours – to wear comfortable shoes, to watch out for personal belongings, and most importantly, to be respectful of other guests on the Walk.

  1. If you want to be sure to join a Walk at a particular time, come a few minutes early, and make yourself known to the City Guide as soon as you arrive.
  2. Keep in mind that visitor tips are your City Guide’s only source of revenue.
  3. Word of mouth is important to us. If you like our work, tell your friends or your hotel about us, or review Discover Walks on www.TripAdvisor.com

About Us

We are a network of locally-born-and-raised guides. We know our home cities as only a native would – the landmarks and the heritage, but also the side streets, the secret spots and the good gossip.

We started Discover Walks in Paris, in 2010, to give visitors a couple of special hours walking around Paris with a real native – the Paris a tourist would never be able to find alone, the kind of experience you would have only in the company of a good and knowledgeable friend – fun, informative and most of all, personal to you and your guide. The idea has taken hold with tourists with over 50,000 of them joining our tours in two seasons – and we expanded to San Francisco. And now to cities across Europe as well.

We have set a lofty goal for ourselves – to become your natural go-to-partner around the world for discovering cities, thanks to enthusiastic, intimate and fun walking tours. A tall order perhaps, but here is how we intend to fill it:

  • Best tours – our short, intimate and multiple walking tours are designed to bring you the essence of your destination city
  • Best guides – our locally-born-and-raised, young, enthusiastic guides are independent, self-guided individuals selected for their unique ability to bring out their passion for their home city. With each major landmark, you receive an insider’s view, and the guides also show you places only locals know and regular tourists miss
  • Best prices – we are a ‘free,’ tips-only service – you decide how much the tour is worth after enjoying it

about-usToday we are delighted our tours are being recognized as innovative, precious and fun by the media and tourism professionals, with numerous awards and recognitions to boot. Most important to us, our guests recommend us to their friends and relatives, and follow us on multiple tours in multiple cities.

Our guides are called City Guides. Their job is to know their city better than an English cabbie knows London. We do extensive training and conduct written and oral tests. Everywhere our English needs to be understandable to visitors from Australia or Argentina or the USA or Japan – as Discover Walks guests come from everywhere.

Our City Guides add their personal stories to every walk, from what it’s like to study in the local school to the restaurant they went to on their first date. Thus each Walk includes famous local landmarks as well as unique times when each guest “feels like a native”.

Our Core Walks are all free of charge – you give what you think is right for what you get. You’re always welcome to join us, without advanced booking – our Walks start and end at major city landmarks.

Traveler Reviews. In 2017, realizing that travelers like to read about other travelers’ experiences, we broke the piggy bank and retained the leading independent auditor in the field, Feefo, to collect and post guest reviews. These reviews show across our website – clean, unfiltered, to help you pick a tour.

Our original founders Alexandre Gourevitch (Paris native) and Jim Jorgensen (a Californian) represent the two spectrums of each Walk – the local and the guest. Today, our City Guides take great pride in constantly improving each Walk. We are especially thankful to our founding staff Bertrand, Charlotte, Cécile and petit Victor, for sticking with us at the beginning.

Discover Walks is a trademark of our owner Charing Cross Corporation (our lawyers made us put this in.) Discover Walks is operated by Discover Walks LLC. We are insured by CNA Insurance Company Limited’s sub/succursale at 37 rue de Liège F 75008 Paris France.

We walk rain or shine. Each time, on each tour, we hope to turn your vacation into a celebration.

FAQ

Give me one reason I should go on a walking tour with Discover Walks

Lali, Barcelona : Well, how would you like to explore our city – on your own or with a local? Most people think spending an hour or two with a local showing them the city is a big plus to their visit.

I think what we do is pretty unique – natives who are in love with their city take you around and look after you as if you were friends of our best friends.

Should I join a Discover Walks tour on my first day?

Lali, Barcelona : Yes! I recommend it, as much as you can. So many people tell us they are sorry they joined us late in their stay.

We’ll give you loads of information that you will want to use throughout your stay.

I too like it best when guests come on my tour on their first day – I can make suggestions to them so they make the most out of our city.

How much should I tip? Is there a suggested donation?

Pauline, Paris : So many people ask for benchmarks! That is so considerate of them. I now tell them – most tours charge €15 and up. Discover Walks is different – we don’t have a set charge, each guest pays what the tour is worth to them.

My best tip was €55 from one lady from Australia. She is welcome any time!

For me, if a guest gives me €15 at the end of our tour, he/she tells me I exceeded their expectations. €10 means I’ve done great. And €5 means I should try harder next time. And I like it this way – pressure is on me, I have to give a good tour! Fun, informative and personal.

How will I recognize the city guide?

Stefan, London : You won’t be able to miss our bright pink jacket. Not distinguished perhaps, but very distinctive!

How can FREE tours possibly make economic sense for the guides involved?

Stefan, London : Discover Walks isn’t making me rich, but most times guests are pretty generous with me. And this is a job I just love.
You are asking how much money are we making? We are all independent guides. About 50% of our income goes to marketing, brochures, websites etc. –all the ways that people find us. We keep the rest to ourselves as our net income.

How long do your walking tours last?

Molly, San Francisco : On average, 90 minutes. Time goes by very quickly, even for people who are not used to walking.
If you want to plan your next activity after one of our tours, allow under two hours.

Do you go inside the landmarks you mention?

Molly, San Francisco : We don’t go inside monuments, no. What we want to show you is outside, on the streets – it’s a feeling, people, how a neighbourhood lives and looks like.
Initially we did this in the interest of time, but overtime I have also noticed the outside architecture often tells the story better – if you take Notre Dame as an example, it is the flying buttresses, the gargoyles, the towers, the façade, the rose-windows – all things seen from outside – that are important and interesting.

Should I sign up ahead of time?

Thomas, Paris : Walk-ins are our normal way of doing. That said, early sign-ups are welcome, they help us plan our schedules.
It’s just parties of 8 or more need to sign up. Otherwise we may not be able to accommodate them.

How early do I need to show up for a tour?

Thomas, Paris : We accept everyone, so no need to show up in advance – nevertheless the walking tours start right on time, out of respect for people who are punctual.
Personally, I show up a good 10-15 minutes early. It gives me time to meet my guest before our tour.

Do you really walk rain or shine?

Martina, Prague : Absolutely we do. You can hardly tell a visitor to come back next week when the weather is nice, can you?
Some of my best experiences have been with the worst of weathers, if you can believe it – everyone else was home, the city was all ours!

I am not much of a walker, how fit do I need to be?

Martina, Prague : Our walking tours are not exercice! You won’t even notice you’ve been walking. Only people in wheelchairs need to be cautious – we always mention about wheelchairs in our literature.

What are “traveler reviews”?

Travelers like to know about other travelers’ experiences before they pick a tour. That’s what our client reviews are for – real comments, from real travelers. We’ve retained the leading independent auditor, Feefo, to collect and post these comments – unfiltered – from guests. After you take a tour with us, Feefo will ask you too about your experience.

Before you pick one of our tours, read our reviews from guests – from fellow-travelers.

To inquire about a particular tour, look at the “tour reviews” (also called “product reviews”) on that tour’s webpage. Every tour has a different set of reviews.

To find out about our overall service: online booking and payment, customers relations and so on, read our “service reviews” by clicking on the yellow sticker that shows either on the left side or the bottom of our pages. Our service reviews are the same all across our website.

If a tour doesn’t have any review, it is likely a new tour, or a tour Feefo does not contact our guests about afterwards.
