Top 10 Interesting Facts about Magic Fountain

The Magic Fountain, which was once a fountain, can be seen in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain’s Montjuic area at the top of Avinguda Maria Cristina. On the Montjuic Mountain, close to the Placa d’ Espanya and Poble de Barcelona, this Fountain has been located beneath the Palau Nacional.

Like most nearby constructions, the Magic Fountain was built for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition. This was a large fair in which 20 European countries participated to demonstrate their respective prowess in the arts and technology. The Fountain’s design was proposed a year earlier before its exhibition by the Catalan Architect and Engineer Charles Buigas. They had experimented with the construction of illuminated fountains.

The first of which took place in 1922 at Pedralbes’ Royal Palace. The fountain was unveiled on May 19, 1929, a day before the start of the exhibition, despite criticism that it was an unduly ambitious concept. Its initial plan called for a system of colorful lighting to illuminate the streams of water that fluctuated in length and width, producing a comical show. Sadly, the fountain was severely damaged during the Spanish Civil War and wasn’t restored to operation until 1955, when Bugas personally oversaw the renovation.
