Information is the world’s most consumed commodity. Journalists are at the heart of gathering it and disseminating it.

Over the years some journalists have stood out and their works impacted people in their country or the world over.

Here is a list of the 10 most famous journalists of all time.

1.  Larry King

King got into broadcasting by chance after being directed to try his luck in Florida which had openings for inexperienced broadcasters.

He took the bait and went on to have one of the most legendary careers in media.

Larry King carried out approximately 50,000 interviews with presidents, movie stars, politicians, activists among others in a half-century on radio and television.

The most visible part of his career was the 25 years as the host of CNN’s globally popular “Larry King Live.” 

2. Hu Shuli

She is the founder and publisher of Caixin Media. Further, she serves as a member of the Reuters Editorial Advisory Board and a member of the International Media Council of the World Economic Forum.

  Shuli comes from a family of notable journalists: her grandfather, Hu Zhongchi, was a famous translator and editor at Shen Bao and his older brother Hu Yuzhi was involved in editing and publishing.

Her mother, Hu Lingsheng, was a senior editor at Workers’ Daily.

She was awarded the 2003 International Editor of the Year by the World Press Review, The US magazine Foreign Policy named her as one of the top 100 public intellectuals in the world in May 2008.

Hu combines her influence as one of the country’s foremost journalists with a hawkish business sense.

China Media Capital, an $833 million venture capital fund with connections to Rupert Murdoch, bought a 40% stake in Hu’s Caixin Media, one of China’s leading independent news organizations.

He was BBC’s most prominent reporter and host covering Africa; he was quite likely the most recognized journalist on the continent.

Dumor, a native of Ghana started as a traffic reporter for a local radio station in the Ghanaian capital Accra. But a few years later, joined the BBC and quickly became a star in the organization.

He is an American journalist and a news anchor. Rather began his career in Texas, becoming shooting to fame after his reporting saved thousands of lives during Hurricane Carla in September 1961.

He spontaneously created the first radar weather report by overlaying a transparent map over a radar image of Hurricane Carla.

Rather landed the hottest interviews with the world’s most important figures, from the famous to the infamous.

7.      Ernest Hemingway

Hemingway was an American novelist, short-story writer, journalist, and sportsman.

His economical and understated writing style had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction, while his adventurous lifestyle and his public image brought him admiration from later generations.

Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s, and he was awarded the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature. 

No American writer is more associated with writing about war in the early 20th century than Ernest Hemingway.

8.      Anderson Cooper

An American journalist, TV personality and author better known for his exploits at CNN. Cooper has anchored major breaking news stories, notable being the network’s overnight coverage of the war in Iraq.

He moderated a Democratic presidential candidate’s forum the network jointly sponsored with Rock the Vote.

Before joining CNN, he was an ABC News correspondent and host of the network’s reality program, The Mole.

Cooper joined ABC from Channel One News, where he served as a reporter and producer.

His work has won several awards including an Emmy Award for his contribution to ABC’s coverage of Princess Diana’s funeral.

He also got a Silver Plaque from the Chicago International Film Festival for his report from Sarajevo on the Bosnian civil war and a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding TV Journalism for his report on gay high school athlete Corey Johnson.

9. Zeinab Badawi

She is a Sudanese-British television and radio journalist. She  was a presenter of the ITV Morning News and co-presented Channel 4 News with Jon Snow.

Her father was a newspaper editor inspiring Zeinab’s passion for journalism.

She was part of the Oxford Broadcasting Society in her college days at Oxford. She is a prolific broadcast journalist who has hosted programmes like Hard Talk, Global Questions and World Debate for BBC.

Zeinab is a recipient of The British Academy’s President’s Medal for services to broadcasting and advocacy for female education.

10. Amadou Mahtar Ba

Amadou Ba is one of Africa’s most influential

media men. He is the CEO of the African Media Initiative (AMI), and possibly the most connected person in the media environment, with access to the biggest media owners operating across the continent.

The Senegalese founder of AllAfrica.com is also a consultant man for many media-related issues, including press freedom and the development of the media sector, be it in terms of finance, capacity building or the strengthening of journalistic ethics in Africa.

Ba is his influence to press African leaders to pay more attention to the development of the media industry.
