10 Italian Men’s Fashion Brands we Should all Love

Word on the street is that if you ever want to catch a glimpse of very fashionable men, you need not look any further. Just turn your head towards Italian men and you will have your answer. It is no surprise, therefore, that some of the best, most popular and most fashionable men’s brands are Italian. Of course, that is not to say other countries’ brands are whack. Nope! We are just completely appreciating that indeed the veterans in the fashion industry when it comes to designing especially, are Italians. With that said, let us just take a look at some of the Italian men’s fashion brands we should all love and talk about.

1. Gucci

I’m sure you knew this would top my list. There is no one who doesn’t know or has at least heard of Gucci. A hot contender for the biggest high-fashion label in the world, Gucci has been at the cutting edge since 1921. Imagine that! 100-plus years. Having played host to creative forces including current creative designer Alessandro Michele and the great Tom Ford, the Florentine fashion house has spent much of the last few decades remoulding the industry in its own image. It’s fashion’s premier trendsetter and, by extension, one of the most important names in menswear today.

2. Canali

Giovanni and Giacomo Canali established their very popular label back in 1934 in Brianza. By the 1970s, the company had become a specialist in outerwear (an area it’s still an expert in) before later expanding into all areas of menswear, with suiting at the forefront. Yes, all those classy suits you come across are mostly Canali. Canali now has thousands of employees and sells in over 100 countries, where the ‘Made in Italy‘ mantra still matters.

3. Ermenegildo Zegna

Traditionally a maker of textiles, Ermenegildo Zegna produces over 1,000 different clothes each year. This brand is a family firm that has managed to very quietly become a benchmark in tailoring. The company pioneered ready-to-wear suiting in Italy and has since gone on to ensure excellence by running a fully vertically integrated operation. I mean, from its own sheep in Australia, via its mills and tailors in its homeland, it controls every step. It isn’t a surprise that they are such a big household name.

4. Luca Faloni

You need only take a cursory glance at Luca Faloni’s garments to know where this label hails from. It’s not a surprise that it is an Italian brand. Honestly, only an Italian brand could produce clothing that mashes up smart and casual so effortlessly. And we haven’t even talked about its quality yet! For the most part, all of Luca Faloni’s garb is handmade in Italy, using only the finest locally sourced materials. By beautiful sourced materials I mean beautifully soft linen shirts, High-grade cashmere knitwear and pretty much everything else a man could possibly need to create a stunning capsule wardrobe.

5. Stone Island

Arguably the first brand to take the functional aesthetic of military and workwear and develop it into garments using very high-tech materials, Stone Island (and its brother brand CP Company) is one of the 20th century’s most influential menswear labels. It is preferable to men not only because of it being comfortable but also because of its practicability. Founded by Massimo Osti, and driven forward by Carlo Rivetti, Stone Island has advanced the likes of woven steel, transformable clothing and garment dyeing while garnering a legion of streetwear fanatics along the way.

6. Prada

Ever heard of that line, “the devil wears Prada?” This is the Prada! The statement simply means, don’t be fooled. The devil can come looking all good and you can easily fall into his traps. As one of the most iconic names in fashion, Prada began life as so many high-fashion houses do, by crafting luxury leather goods for the upper classes. Fast forward to the present day and the collections have expanded to include everything from tailoring to logo T-shirts, although footwear and leather bags are still the label’s main pull. It is quite a household name that has crafted a name for itself because of the high quality and logo-branded merchandise it manages to produce.

7. Boglioli

Boglioli is the holy trinity of menswear. Embodied by the three main qualities: Fit, quality and fabric, this very classy brand embody wholeheartedly every single garment. I know the same could be said for many similar brands within the casual tailoring niche, but what sets Boglioli apart is its very unique take on classic pieces. Boglioli was arguably the first brand to look at a blazer through a sportswear lens. Get that picture? Before Boglioli, that picture was just absurd. Them managing to experiment with unstructured cuts, garment dyeing and pre-washing for a more relaxed, lived-in look is just now the trend. This result is now a style that has become an integral part of contemporary menswear, managing to bridge the gap between smart and casual.

The Velasca story is one of craftsmanship, innovation and finding that sweet merge between exorbitantly-priced high-end luxury and the cheap, poor-quality offering of fast fashion. From humble beginnings in the small Italian city of Montegranaro to a worldwide luxury footwear brand, Velasca is the go-to brand if interested in a fine-quality pair of Italian-made shoes straight from the artisan to your feet.

9. Brunello Cucinelli

Cucinelli is the Italian fashion designer who made brightly coloured cashmere sweaters popular and grew to become a purveyor of the minimalist, carefully coordinated, super-luxe aesthetic his brand now embodies. Most pieces are still made by a network of some 2,500 or so small-scale artisanal craftspeople across Umbria and Tuscany, ensuring the highest quality standards. Growing up in a peasant farming family, such was his insistence on properly pressed trousers that he won his nickname “The Lord”.

10. Borsalino

Rome may not be short of quality hitmakers, but there’s only one king in that field: Giuseppe Borsalino. I mean, the guy managed to make a fedora hat look cool. Nowadays, it is such a classy, casual and even official look. You can never go wrong with a Borsalino fedora. Whether you are hiding an early balding, thinning hair or just trying to look cool, this is it! Having recently turned 160, Borsalino was passed from the founding brothers, Alessandro and Lazzaro, to son, then to nephew. Borsalino even had a cult French new-wave detective film named after it. That’s how popular the name is.
