10 Best Thrift Stores in Rome

One of the first things I wanted to do when I got to Rome was thrift shop. I’d been told by numerous goers before me of how fabulous the vintage shopping scene is in the Italian capital; after all, this is a country that takes fashion very seriously.

There are thrift shops and second hand stores all over the city center, but admittedly most of them are a waste of time as they are largely unkept. The following are a reliable few that are worth a visit and are known around town as being the go-to spots for Roman thrift shopping.

1. Twice Vintage Shop in Rome

Twice Vintage is my favorite thrift shop in Rome. It’s high quality vintage (usually name brand) at relatively low prices. They are also open consistently throughout the week which is more than most places care to do.

The store is located a short walk south of the Vatican City, on the left bank of the River Tiber . The neighborhood is known as Trastevere and is one of the trendiest spots in Rome, especially for fashion.

The store makes an effort to source vintage clothing from all eras, and divides their rails accordingly. You’ll find everything from basics like jeans and t-shirts, to full on flapper dresses and feather covered nightgowns from the 50s.

Their accessory collection is wonderful too; you can find a Gucci bag here for well under what they are worth.

If you’ve come to Twice Vintage specifically to shop, spend some time wandering around the Trastevere area as well. There are many more hidden gems of boutiques amidst the cafes.

2. Pifebo Vintage Shop in Rome

Pifebo actually have three stores throughout Rome, but the one I find most success in is in the northern region of Monti.

Pifebo seems to import all of their vintage from the American market. They offer a great selection of western trends from the 80s and 90s, as well as basic staple items through the 2000s.

For some reason wearing the American flag on ones clothing remains a very sought after trend for European youth, and Pifebo markets on this. You can get flag printed everything in store.

Next door to their main thrift shop they also have a kilo shop. This is more of a buried treasure kind of store that one needs to dig through to find the gold. Once you do, you pay by the kilo. Each kilo is charged at €10 and there is no limit as to how much you can buy as a bundled weight.

3. Flamingo Vintage Shop in Rome

Not far away, also in the neighborhood of Monti, the Flamingo Vintage store takes a far more curated approach to thrifting.

Each item in the shop has clearly been hand selected by someone “in the industry” and chosen as a brand reflection of what Flamingo is all about. It’s high quality vintage with prices to match.

The store feels more like a boutique in terms of cleanliness and layout. What’s great about this is that despite feeling like you’re shopping new, you’re still recycling pre-loved clothing and not contributing to the demand of new production.

This is the most important facet of thrift shopping; the ability to reuse and recycle old fashion and in turn reduce the carbon footprint that is left in the production of constantly making new clothing.

Flamingo is a great place to go if you need something to wear for an occasion or event in Rome.

4. Humana Vintage in Rome

I walked past Humana during a guided walking tour of the city center, not far from the Termini station. I was informed by someone far wiser than I that Humana is actually a global initiative whereby all proceeds from their thrift sales go to charities in developing countries.

Needless to say I could not wait to see what they had to offer, and I was pleasantly surprised by their on trend range of vintage clothing.

Humana doesn’t discriminate on stock; you’ll find everything from name branded vintage, to items from your grandmothers closet and even new age labels like Zara. I lover their collection of silk scarves, and the fact that they are usually on sale.

Set aside some time for the inevitable search that will ensue the minute you arrive. It is by no means a small store and finding the right pieces for your taste takes time.

5. Moll Flanders in Rome

Moll Flanders is one of Rome’s only consignment thrift shops. It is located not far from the Colosseum.

A consignment vintage store is one that adopts its stock from people who bring in clothing they want to get rid of. They do not source their vintage clothing themselves.

This means that what you find inside the store is dependent on what has been brought in by members of the public. The clothing is assessed upon arrival and the store generally takes what is believed to be of quality and appeal, and sends the rest home with the owner.

In a way it is just highly curated vintage. Things will cost slightly more at this thrift shop because they are paying both the owner and themselves, but the quality usually compensates for this.

This unique tiny shop should be on your list if you enjoy stylish, feminine antique clothing. The hand-selected items are in keeping with the theme, and the store is tidy and colorful. So, among a host of high-end fashion brands, expect to find crazy designs, vibrant silk shirts, and velvety suede trousers from a variety of budget-friendly names.

Although the majority of the clothing at this cute little shop is for women, there is a little variety for males in the back. In either case, pay Fabio, the business owner, a visit. Your presence will be captured by the stunning storefront of this vintage boutique, but the attentiveness of Chiara, the owner, will undoubtedly make this your first of many visits. She hopes that her ultra-feminine, glittering tiny business, which sells gorgeous vintage clothing, will have a significant positive impact on women’s body confidence.

Chiara claims that her store stands apart from the competition because of the special relationship she has developed with her customers through dialogue and guidance, and we couldn’t agree more.
