Delaware State University is also known as DSU. It is a research public university located in Dover, Delaware.

The university has two different satellite campuses, one campus is located in Wilmington, while the other is located in Georgetown.

Delaware state university has a total of four colleges with a diverse population of undergraduate and together with advanced-degree students.

1. The University has a No-Smoking Policy

In the history of black colleges and universities, Delaware State University became among the universities to have a no-smoking policy.

The journey to implement this policy began in 2015 when the university restricted smoking in four designated areas. The university provided educational resources to students such as smoking cessation tools, the university also introduced programs to help addicted students.

A tobacco-free policy was adopted in August. Due to this policy, the university received the ACAS Health Leadership Award In 2017.

The award was presented by the“ Public Health Service Officers Foundation for the Advancement of Public Health, the Truth Initiative, Arizonans Concerned About Smoking, and the Arizona NAACP.”

2. The First Black University to Acquire an Institution

Wesley College was officially acquired by Delaware state university On July 1, 2021. The 157-year-old private institution was founded in 1873 by the Methodist Church 1873.

Delaware state university went down in history as the first-ever black institution to acquire a college that is not a black college or university. After the acquisition, Wesley College was Delaware state university’s Downtown campus “DSU Downtown” since it was close to Downtown Dover.

Delaware state university College of Health and Behavioral Science courses were relocated to Wesley College, these courses include, Public and Allied Health, Psychology, and Social Work programs. This move was to help preserve the rich history of the former Wesley College.

The university’s main campus sits on an area of 400-acre which is 1.6 km2. It is located in Dover, which is the capital of Delaware.

Traveling to the campus from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., takes two hours while using a car. From New York City it takes approximately three hours.

4. Delaware state university Main Campus has Five Residential Halls

There are a total of five traditional residential halls at the university’s main campus. Three out of the five apartment halls are reserved for the upperclassmen on campus.

However,  Off-campus,  the university has an apartment complex and also a residential hall. Delaware state university has also activated two residential halls at DSU Downtown which was the former Wesley College campus.

5. The University Received a Tree Recognition

Out of 148 universities in the country, Delaware state university is among the institution that received Tree Campus USA recognition presented by Arbor Day Foundation.

 The university has two farms which are near Kenton and Smyrna. Delaware state university also has Airway Science Program which is based at Delaware Air Park in Cheswold.
