Top 10 Picnic Spots in Barcelona

In Barcelona, the majority of your time will be spent outdoors. The city’s major attractions include a variety of architectural wonders, most of which are best explored from street level.

When it comes to downtime in Barcelona, most people flock to the beaches or parks to soak up the sun. For this reason, picnicking is a popular pastime in this coastal region. Barcelona is filled with public park spaces that open from morning until night, offering the people safe green spaces in which to escape the city bustle.

1. Joan Miró Park in Barcelona

Some parks in Barcelona are less of a city-escape than others. The Joan Miró Park is a small green space in the city center dedicated to the memory of Spanish artist, Joan Miró.

His famous sculpture “Woman and Bird” stands in the park, as do an array of palm trees. Picnicking is permitted anywhere in the vicinity, but you’ll probably want to stick to the lush grass areas on the western side.

2. Jardines de Laribal in Barcelona

The Jardines de Laribal is my personal favorite picnic spot in Barcelona. It was once an opulent estate just outside of the Poble Sec neighborhood, but was transformed into public gardens a few years ago.

This land has more of a botanical vibe as opposed to just another city park, and the landscaping between the old architecture speaks for itself. The park is open to all between 10am and 9pm daily, and picnics are always encouraged.

3. Parc de Cervantes in Barcelona

The Parc de Cervantes is another gorgeous, serene park space in the deep north of Barcelona’s city. This too feels more like a botanical garden as opposed to a park, thanks to the abundance of roses that grow here year round.

The Parc de Cervantes has a designated picnic area; you’ll find it directly on the left as you enter the garden.

4. Parc del Laberint d’Horta in Barcelona

If you venture a bit deeper into the north, you’ll eventually come to a park nestled in a mountainous cove: Parc del Laberint d’Horta. This neoclassical garden was once part of an affluent estate. Today it is a public space open to all who are open to making the journey to it.

The grounds offer ornate pavilions, mazes made from trees, beautiful water features and a romantic picnic garden. Definitely a number one spot for an outdoor date while in Barcelona.

5. Barceloneta Beach in Barcelona

We are quick to opt for parks when considering a picnic in Barcelona, but lest not forget that the entire coast of Barcelona offers an expansive beach!

Picnicking on Barceloneta beach is common amongst tourists. In the summer you’ll find hundreds of people pack up a sunset snack box and head to the sand to kiss the day goodbye.

For more intimate picnicking I recommend heading away from the main swimming beaches in the city.

6. Ciutadella Park in Barcelona

The Ciutadella Park is the most central and convenient of park picnic spots in the city. Again, this is a popular one with the tourists, and you’ll find picnics taking place here from morning until night.

Because of the high foot traffic, I like Ciutadella Park for a dinner picnic in the summer! The park closes just before 11pm, leaving optimum time for a full evening worth of activities.

7. Parc de la Trinitat in Barcelona

This is a great park for a day-out of the city center. You’ll head up the coast toward Badalona, and then move inland along the Besos River.

The Parc e la Trinitat is a magnificent landscaped space that looks more like the backyard of a French chateau as opposed to a Spanish green space.

There are picnic and barbecue facilities inside of the park, as well as sporting courts and local scripture art.

8. Park Güell in Barcelona

The Park Güell wouldn’t be my first choice when looking for a park in which to picnic in Barcelona, simply because of the amount of foot traffic you’ll have to picnic around when you get there.

Nevertheless, picnicking inside of Gaudi’s most public creation is likely on the bucket list of a lot of Barcelona newcomers. My advice? Get there early, take up space, and opt for the edges of the park as opposed to the very center.

9. Besòs River in Barcelona

Few people learn of the Besòs River on their first trip to Barcelona, simply because the river is so far north whereas the ocean is so near to the city center.

If you decide to visit the Besòs while in town, take a picnic along and settle in anywhere along the plush banks that boarder it from east to west. My favorite spot to picnic along the Besòs is where the river meets the ocean at the eastern end.

10. Montjuïc Cemetery in Barcelona

For some, picnicking in a park might feel all too common, even if you are in one of Spain’s most renounced destinations.

The Montjuïc Cemetery is an usual alternative to park picnicking, and the public are totally permitted to bring blankets and food into the grounds and dine amongst the permanent residents.
