Prague is an exciting, electric, beautiful, and unique city. The influx of tourists combined with the locals create a mix of people from various backgrounds, ethnicities, and lifestyles. Bringing in people from all over the world and noticing the interactions with the traditional customs of the country have created an inclusive and friendly community in the capital city of Prague. For those who identify as queer, the Czech Republic is one of the most liberal and inclusive countries in Eastern Europe – and Europe as a whole. The consistent views across the country all reflect the understanding and progressive thinking of treating everyone as equals and favoring major topics such as legalizing gay marriage and recognizing civil partnerships. Fortunately, the humanistic views extend to the bar scene in the city. The amount of LGBTQ+ pubs, bars, and nightclubs have been continuously growing over the years, giving a safe, fun, and eclectic space for queer people to enjoy on a night out. Even though these venues are sometimes solely for those who identify as such, most of these spots are welcoming to anyone who wants to have a fun night out with good vibes. Here we have compiled a list of the best gay bars in Prague for your next weekend away.

The Bourgeois Pig

First up on this handy list, we have The Bourgeois Pig. This bar provides a homely feel and a comfortable vibe that all can appreciate. The eclectic design, 90’s decor, and relaxed atmosphere make this a chill place to hang out for a few drinks. Very hipster, you’ll definitely be able to grab a cute Instagram photo here to make your ex jealous. If you come from a state or country where weed is legal, then maybe you’re missing that cannabis taste – no worries here. The cannabis-infused cocktail L’OPIUM is probably the most popular on the menu here – and we can attest to it being quite good. The dim lights, record-shop feel, and friendly owner make all feel welcome here. The regular live music and comedy acts can provide a fun activity and entertainment for the beginning of a fun night out.

Piano Bar

Next up, Piano Bar is a long-running staple in the gay neighborhood, Vinohrady. Most locals find themselves here to begin their night out, soaking in the lounge atmosphere, themed parties, and frequent drag shows. The customers here are mainly all queer people, so if you want a strictly-gay bar, then this is a good spot to go to. The locals who consistently frequent this bar all seem to enjoy the quirkiness and interesting atmosphere, combined with the newer ownership that took over a few years ago, creating a friendly space with an upgraded interior. The student nights are popular on Thursdays, but the crowd here is mainly a mix of all ages and personalities. Open daily until 2 am, you’ll be sure to have an interesting night here, meeting people from across the world and hanging out in one of the most popular gay spots in the city.

DANDY

Third, on our list is DANDY. If you look up ‘dandy’ in a dictionary you might find that it means “a man unduly devoted to style, neatness, and fashion in dress and appearance.” We can attest to this fact about the bartenders here – they are some of the most beautiful men. Ever. If that’s not your thing, then you’ll at least highly enjoy the cocktails they’re serving up. Not only are these men beautiful, but they’re extremely good at their job. The classy cocktails, a huge selection of liquors, and outdoor seating make this a great spot for anyone queer – or straight. This isn’t as popular as some of the other always-busy gay bars, so we highly recommend checking this one out before it blows up on the scene.

Friends Prague Bar & Club

Ringing in number four, we have a classic – Friends Prague Bar & Club. This very popular spot combines a bar and club into one, utilizing a massive dance floor, cocktails, talented DJs, and a great atmosphere. Located in the heart of Prague, this easy-to-get-to spot continues to be frequented by locals and tourists alike. The different events most nights of the week provide entertainment that will surely be one of the highlights of your trip. Tuesdays are Karaoke night, so if you’re still hoping to get the golden ticket for American Idol you can head here and try your luck. Thursday has one of the best drag shows around, Friday is a themed-night, and Oldie Saturdays blasts some gay-proud anthems on the speakers. Definitely need to head here for one of your nights in the city, as it’s one of the most popular – and for good reason. With happy hour every night beginning at 10 pm, you can somehow make the Prague bar scene even cheaper than it already is.

Klub U Rudolfa

For some gay history, head to Klub U Rudolfa. Despite not being the flashiest or most popular these days, you have to at least head here for one drink. It’s the longest continually running gay bar in the country. With a down-home and local feel, you can hang out and converse with the local gay Czech guys. Even though it might be mostly locals, it’s a super friendly place to socialize and has a cozy feel. Open daily until 2 am, you can head here any day of the week for a nice drink and some chats with new friends.

Klub 21

If you want to head to a club after one of these gay bars, check out Klub 21. The location of this club is what makes it special – and keeps it free from the throngs of tourists. The hard-to-find club is located in a cellar vault, with the bar being tucked away underground and out of sight. Finding this spot is an adventure in itself. You have to ring the buzzer in order to even get into the door and feel as if you’re about to mistakenly walk into someone’s apartment. Mind you, someone’s apartment that has wonderful cocktails and a dance floor. Once you walk down the hall, you head down the stairs to your left, progressing through some even darker rock-stairs, and then emerging into the bar. Finally. It’s small, friendly, and reminiscent of a dive bar. The crowd here is typically over 25, with many locals and a few internationals who have finally found the location. Open until 3 am (except Sundays), this is a unique and fun spot to keep the party going.

The Saints

Continuing this guide, we present to you The Saints. This cozy bar in the heart of the gay neighborhood is a great spot for having deep conversations, meeting new people, and actually being able to hear one another in a bar/pub setting. Most locals seem to arrive here already on a date since it’s such a good spot to relax, enjoy the chill vibes, and get to know someone. If you come here looking for a date, you might be in some trouble, since most people will be otherwise engaged – unless you’re trying your luck with a couple, and in that case, we wish you luck. The intimate venue creates a sensual atmosphere for your potentially romantic evening. There is ample seating with stools at high-top tables and comfortable couches to snuggle up next to your mates. The barmen here must be drinking the same water as the ones at DANDY, because they’re just as beautiful. The cocktails here are also great and give you a nice little buzz to enjoy the night.

OMG Party

If you’re lucky enough to time your vacation just right, you’ll be able to attend the biggest gay party in the city – the OMG Party at Mecca. This fabulous event takes place every couple of months, with a massive venue, insane music, and an electric atmosphere. Big-name DJs perform here, with entertainment and dancers throughout the entire venue. With 3 floors, numerous bars, friendly staff, and ample room for dancing, this is an event to plan your next trip around.

Q-Cafe

Up next, we have Q-Cafe. This two-floor establishment brings in tons of queer and straight people every week, boasting an inclusive and friendly atmosphere. Spread out between the smoking ground floor and the non-smoking underground level, you won’t have any trouble finding space to dance. The cool part about this bar – the lower floor has free entry for those who are pushing for LGBTQ emancipation. All the more reason to start helping out in your community, huh? The staff are always approachable and polite to whoever comes through the doors, creating the positive energy that makes this place so popular.

Cafe Flirt

If you want a bar that can also double as a cafe lounge, check out Cafe Flirt – and try your luck at the namesake. The very central location makes it a great spot to just stop in, even for a little bit. With a dimly-lit cellar with arched ceilings and a purple glow reflecting off the exposed brick, this really is a good spot to see if you have any game. The cool thing about this spot is the amount of locals that continue to frequent here consistently – that means it must be good, right? Well, we can attest that it really is, with a welcoming staff and cheap, but good, drinks. Even if you stop in mid-afternoon you can still find a good crowd and buzz here, since it’s a mix between a bar and a cafe. You can order a coffee here and try to make a new friend, check out the music that plays here, or try your luck flirting with a new guy. We recommend all three.

Balbi Bar

Last up on this super important list, we have Balbi Bar. Located in the Old Town, you can easily head here on foot after checking out some of the famous attractions. Located in the gay neighborhood of Vinohrady in Prague 2, this small spot provides a homely and cozy feel. The staff also keep this place going strong – they are consistently friendly and very welcoming to everyone, newcomers and regulars alike. The patrons also make this spot even more inclusive, with the locals not being pretentious or unfriendly to foreigners. The cocktails only increase the friendliness of the people frequenting here – probably because they’re so well made. We like the intimate space and friendly people, giving the vibe of a party amongst friends.

Grab your best mates and head to Prague for a weekend of drinking and dancing

Prague is an incredible city, and not just for the architecture, location, and cheap prices. The inclusiveness of the city as a whole makes it a hot spot for queer-minded people across the world. Gay bars are popular around Prague and only growing in number. We like how many of these spots are just very friendly – not necessarily turning away those who identify as straight or heterosexual, but still providing a safe, fun, and non-judgmental space for queer people. If Prague isn’t on your holiday list, it definitely should be – you can enjoy the beautiful parts of the city during the day, and check out the dozens of gay and lesbian bars scattered around the city at night. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like a top-notch vacation to me.
