So back in 2021, the tabloids had a field day when Meghan Markle and Harry (prince of Wales) did an interview with Oprah Winfrey and opened up about how racist the royal family is. She has had a difficult time since joining the family because of the bias she was usually subjected to due to the color of her skin. The whole world gasped at that, and it was even speculated that Harry and his brother William, had a fallout because of those accusations. That was in October 2021. Now, the couple is denying ever accusing the royalty of racism, and people are wondering which is which? People of course had different reactions towards that, some of them feeling like Markle was just looking for attention and thus resorted to falsely accusing the royal family. That she shouldn’t even be talking about racism seeing as she isn’t ‘black enough’ to whine around about something she has never experienced in her life as she was never really seen as a black person when in Hollywood. Some, however, were compassionate about the whole ordeal, sided with Markle, and were quick to offer their support.
However, the story has now changed. Harry recounts the story and says he and Markle never accused his family of racism. So which is which? Is the royal family blatantly and shamelessly racist or are they being accused of something they are completely innocent of? Additionally, during the time of these accusations, Harry and his brother William ended up having a strained relationship which could be seen during queen Elizabeth’s burial ceremony. So could it be they are recounting their story because it was all a lie, to begin with, they were threatened, or even they don’t truly understand what racism is all about? After all, as it was stated, “how would Markle know anything about racism when she has never experienced it? She’s more white than black” (one of the many tabloids addressing the issue).
I truly hope this is not a case of them being silenced because anyway the royal family is powerful and they can easily get rid of someone for shaming their name. So I truly hope that this wonderful family isn’t being subjected to any kind of discrimination and now that they spoke up, they are being forced into silence and recounting their stories. I guess we’ll have to see as time goes by.
It makes me wonder though when we keep talking about racism in this 21st century, what the hell is wrong with human beings? I mean, if we were smart human beings we would never think of ourselves as better than other people just because of the color of our skin. Imagine living in a world where racism wasn’t even a conversation. Where we lived with the innocence of children such that if you see another person, it doesn’t even hit you that the color of their skin is different from yours. We would never have police officers harass people because of racial profiling. We would never have many senseless deaths caused by racial discrimination. We would never have such a conversation with even the royal family, the pillar of a whole nation being accused of such a thing. Humanity is tiresome. Sometimes I feel like even animals are more civilized than us because they don’t discriminate against each other.
Anyway, I hope we do better. I hope there comes a point in life when racism will end up being a forgotten vocabulary. Is it even possible? What do you think?
