What's in our tour?

The Paris Food Tour is a chance to binge on select French foods, to get to know Paris from the inside, to meet some colorful locals, and of course to eat well.

We explore Montorgueil, the heart of good food and the so-called “belly of Paris” for 800 years. The guide loves food and has a knack for good stories. S/he is also a born-and-raised local with plenty of insider’s insights to share.

We meet at the entrance of the pedestrian district of Montorgueil.

Our meeting point offers a sweeping view of rue Montorgueil, a historic food market street most often referred to as “movie-perfect Paris”. Butchers, bakers, fish stores, cheese mongers, oyster stands, and specialty stores are all within sight, all the way to Saint-Eustache church in the distance.

The group is small, and the guide quickly inquires as to what each guest wants to eat and explore. The guide also provides anecdotes to illustrate the place of food in French culture both historically and today.

Our first stop is generally the bakery that “started the baguette revolution” on Sept. 13, 1996. Later we’ll visit another bakery – to compare and contrast the art of baguette-making.

After the first stop, the format will vary depending on the season and the wishes of each group. Still, we will be sure to examine and to sample: cheese of many types – cold cuts – creamy coffee – many kinds of pastry – a glass of wine – and soft drinks.

We will enter historical buildings, run across centuries-old food signs and window shops, visit award-winning food stores, and chat with engaging purveyors.

The guide will discuss how your favorite specialties are made, how some famous recipes were invented, or how to pick the right cheese (and the right wine to go with it). You’ll find out why France has such great food traditions, and you’ll discuss the role of eating in French culture – in matters of politics, business, love, and even romance.

We make several stops to sample the foods we’ve just picked, to discuss them, and to decide what to eat next. Like any food lover, each tour will make room for the particular season and the delivery of the day.
